Donations have been made...

I have some great news from the PAC! The Political Research Committee recommended a number of donations be made before the end of the quarter, and DemOC PAC members approved them all. The following checks have been cut:

$1,000 to Congressman Mike Levin
$1,000 to Congresswoman Katie Porter
$1,000 to Congressman Harley Rouda
$1,000 to Congressman Gil Cisneros
$1,000 to Sara Gideon who is running against Sen. Susan Collins in Maine
$1,000 to Cal Cunningham who is running against Sen. Thom Tillis in N. Carolina
$1,000 to Mark Kelly, who is running against Sen. Martha McSally in Arizona

Many thanks to the Political Research Committee for all their hard work, to all of our members and donors who have made this possible and to all of you who voted...we are proud and happy to make these contributions to these candidates and we look forward to making more as the year goes on! If you aren't yet a member and want to participate in this process, please see link in red below!

Now on to the no less important news...Covid 19...
First and foremost, how is everyone doing? Please let us know if you are well, or if you are not. Please let us know if you need ANYTHING. We are a community and an army...we can cook, we can deliver, we can shop, we can answer questions, we can make a call to keep you company, we are here, on the other end of an email, a phone, a computer.

Tell us what you are doing, politically and not. Tell us what you are reading, cooking, your favorite activity. Send us pictures. Be in touch.

Politically, things are quiet. I miss the political news and am happy to see a political fact on TV occasionally.

Again, stay well and please reply to this email with thoughts, ideas, express your fears, complain or just to say hello.

Dear DemOC PAC Members and Friends,
S

In these tough times, when this president and his supporters put our health and well being in danger, I hope you will consider either joining or making a contribution to DemOC PAC. Though the election may be off the front page, it is still happening and our candidates need to be funded. We need to win the Presidency, the Senate and we must hold on to the House of Representatives!

We are hoping to hold special events but in the meantime, we are all online! If you haven't joined or renewed for 2020, don't wait. If you have joined, can you pitch in another donation? As you see are already making contributions to candidates and we can't do it without you!

Go to the link, click and join today! And please, be generous. We are so appreciative.

Calling all DemOC PAC Volunteers,

Our wonderful Congresspeople need our help! They are asking for volunteers to make phone calls to check in on senior members of the community, on behalf of the campaigns. It's a nice and usually fun call to make! If there are seniors out there who need anything (prescriptions or groceries or just someone to talk to), we can connect their needs &/or concerns back to campaign staff.

Since the phone banks are conducted from the comfort of your home, you will need a computer with internet access, a phone, some time to be trained, and about 2 hours per shift you sign up for.

Please keep track your time - we will be surveying you so we can collectively know how much expert volunteer time DemOC PAC is contributing!

DemOC PAC is a community

It is hard to imagine that it was just a week ago that we had our meeting ...probably our last face-to-face meeting for awhile. We will soon be in touch about an online meeting...our next gathering was scheduled for Tuesday, April 14 so stay tuned....

Our last meeting was a good one and for those who were there it was fun and so nice to be able to get together. For those who weren't, we missed you. We were definitely informed and entertained by Tony Smith...check out the recorded live feed on our Facebook Page.

During these trying times, when there is so much stress and we are trying to navigate life in such a strange fashion, it is good to remember the following:

"

DemOC PAC is a community," says Julie Tapp (Board Member and Activism Chair), "We know many of you have stocked up on groceries and are planning to shelter in place for a while, to minimize exposure to the coronavirus. Some of us may need a little extra help during this time, and others may be able to pitch in. Please reach out here or via private message to let us know if we can fill a need. Especially if you or your loved ones are in a high-risk category, we have volunteers who can shop for you, or walk you through ordering groceries or takeout online. We can walk your dog. If you get lonely or down or need to vent about the latest press conference, please reach out. We all need and want to care for each other through the rough times. We are so grateful for our DemOC PAC community! "

Please be in touch, tell us how you are doing, your thoughts, your needs, your ideas, your projects. We are here for each other and for you. Be well but, if you aren't, let us know and how we can help.

(Just reply to this email and it comes right to us!)

We look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you soon!

Dear DemOC PAC Members and Friends,
S

Though we are not meeting, your membership in DemOC PAC is more important than ever. We are hoping to hold special events but in the meantime, be sure you are a member! If you haven't joined or renewed for 2020, don't wait. If you have joined, can you pitch in another donation for this month? We are already making contributions to candidates locally and throughout the country and we can't do it without your participation.

We've been doing this since 2008 and our contributions have and will continue to make a difference. We are known for our research, for picking good candidates in close elections who need our money.

PACTIVISM

Thank you so, so much to every person who helped with DemOC PACtivism since the beginning of the year. 2020 is the biggest political year of our lives, and we are off to a great start! Leading up to the March 3 primary, DemOC PAC members and friends

delivered 2700 blue voter guides to voters in CA45 and CA48
  • wrote 500 postcards to voters in Yorba Linda
  • We educated voters and boosted turnout for Democrats up and down the ticket!

We are working on teasing out our specific impact. Whatever the results, it certainly made a difference to our organizer to have the DemOC PAC community involved. We hope the time and effort you put in made a difference to you too!

Here are 3 action items you can do from home in the week ahead.

    1.  https://americansofconscience.com/03-15-2020/. You may also enjoy the gratitudes and good news sections at the bottom of the letter, as well as the countdown at the top...174 weeks down, 33 weeks to go until the presidential election!
Sign up for the awesome Americans of Conscience Newsletter and pick a few items to complete this week
    2. Please help us grow by sending out a personal message to like-minded friends with this link http://democpac.org/membership.html
Take some time to go through your contacts and ask your friends (here and around the country) to join DemOC PAC. DemOC PAC's Political Research Committee is working hard to identify the most effective use of funds for us to bundle for key Senate and House races between now and November. But to give strategically, we have to raise the funds! If we pool our resources, our dollars can have an optimal impact on electoral gains in November.
    3. JulieTapp1@gmail.com) about what kinds of effective political actions you would likely participate in over the weeks and months ahead. Would you write postcards that we can stockpile to send close to November? Are you likely to join a busload of people to register Democrats or help get out the vote in Arizona when it's safe to venture out again? Will you volunteer for OC Congressional campaigns? Can you host a house party or fundraiser or get a great speaker for DemOC PAC? We welcome any ideas you have to share!

    Tomorrows meeting is ON!

Dear DemOC PAC Members and Friends,

Thanks to everyone for your quick responses. We have taken everyone's concerns into account and given the many people who are interested in participating tomorrow, we have decided to go ahead with the meeting. No hugging, no seating on top of each other and no snacks, though we will have water and wine. We look forward to seeing those of you who are able to come....

    Are we meeting?

Dear DemOC PAC Members and Friends,

We have a great meeting planned for this Tuesday March 10 but we know many are concerned about attending meetings and gatherings because of the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

As of March 5, the OC Health Care Agency says the risk to the public is believed to be low, and there is no recommendation to cancel business or social events. (But because the Trump Administration decided not to accept the World Health Organization's test kits, which went to 40+ nations, and decided to develop their own, which they botched, there is no way of knowing the true spread of the virus. If you want to know more on this read the Washington Post and Politico today.) OC reports 4 total COVID-19 cases so far; all are travel-related and there are no deaths. (OChealthinfo.com)

We want to address any concerns you might have. DemOC PAC leadership is considering whether enough members will attend the March 10 meeting to make it viable. Help us by answering this simple questionnaire by 5 p.m. Sunday March 8.
Reply to this email with your answer to this question:

Will you attend the Tuesday March 10 meeting? YES or NO

Thank you so much and we really look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon.

South Carolina is around the corner

´╗┐South Carolina is around the corner, Super Tuesday is just a few days away and if we weren't distracted by the corona virus and our disappearing 401ks, the only thing on our minds would be what is happening on March 3. How can it be that so many of us remain undecided on how to vote at the top of the ticket?! I cannot wait to get together with everyone and discuss the outcome just a week after our nail-biting primaries. So looking forward to seeing you on March 10 when we are joined by

Dear DemOC PAC Members and Friends,
    S
    VOTING

At our last meeting, there was some discussion about whether it matters when or how you vote this time, given all the changes to the voting system. (Because the news cycle is hyperactive when it comes to the presidential race, and final results for some races took so long to tabulate in 2018, some people are thinking strategically about how to cast their votes.) Thanks to Carole Uhlaner, UCI Professor and DemOC PAC member, for getting clarification on these questions from OC Registrar of Voters, Neal Kelley.

If one wants to be sure their ballot is counted in the results released Election night, March 3, they must either
    1. Vote at a Vote Center anytime, up to and including election day when polls close at 8 p.m.
    2. OR vote by mail so that the Registrar receives the ballot by midnight Sunday March 1 (so mail the ballot a few days prior, or turn in to a vote center by 8 p.m. Sunday, or drop in a secure ballot drop box by Saturday, February 29).

On Election night, the first results will be reported just after the polls close with updates thereafter every half hour until all the above ballots are counted; the Registrar anticipates finishing that count around 11 p.m. on March 3.
After that, Registrar will process remaining ballots, with the first update of tallies at 5 p.m. on March 4 and then at 5 p.m. every day thereafter until all votes are counted.

In any case, vote! The timing only might matter for the presidential primary, not for the other races including the important one for boards of education and supervisors. Vote by mail ballots received by March 6 will still be counted.

In the 10 years we have been a PAC, it has NEVER been more important to give money than it is this year. Membership dues for 2020 are only $100 per year. But don’t be constrained, especially this year, by our basic level of dues. Many people pay more, up to $2700. You can join at the $100 level or $250 or $1000 -- whatever suits your budget. Please be generous this year, the most important year ever. And feel free to break your dues into monthly payments. Deepest kudos and thanks

to PAC members and friends who have hit the streets to knock on doors and drop literature for Democratic candidates in the past few weeks.... we LITERALLY could not have distributed those 2000 blue voter guides without you!!!
We still have a few hundred voter guides to get out there, so please contact Julie Tapp to arrange a time to help if you can!  JulieTapp1@gmail.com or 949-702-6606.
Although we have gotten a good response to the voter guide around UCI, we are also finding a high need for information within the student population when it comes to where and when to vote. Many have not received ballots at their current address, either because they are permanently registered at their parents' address, or because of a move since they last registered to vote. They also don't seem to know about the 2 vote centers on campus which will open Feb. 29, or that they can just walk in and request a ballot. We really need to continue to do this educational work on and around campus between now and March 3. Educating young voters is an investment in November, and in the future of the planet. Please help out if you can!
