South Carolina is around the corner

South Carolina is around the corner, Super Tuesday is just a few days away and if we weren't distracted by the corona virus and our disappearing 401ks, the only thing on our minds would be what is happening on March 3. How can it be that so many of us remain undecided on how to vote at the top of the ticket?! I cannot wait to get together with everyone and discuss the outcome just a week after our nail-biting primaries. So looking forward to seeing you on March 10 when we are joined by

UCI Political Science and Law

Professor Tony Smith
who will discuss
"Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail
After Super Tuesday:
What does it all mean and where are we headed?"

When Tony was here last year and he had us rapt

and in STITCHES and we all envied those UCI students
who are lucky enough to take his classes.

Dear DemOC PAC Members and Friends,
S
VOTING

At our last meeting, there was some discussion about whether it matters when or how you vote this time, given all the changes to the voting system. (Because the news cycle is hyperactive when it comes to the presidential race, and final results for some races took so long to tabulate in 2018, some people are thinking strategically about how to cast their votes.) Thanks to Carole Uhlaner, UCI Professor and DemOC PAC member, for getting clarification on these questions from OC Registrar of Voters, Neal Kelley.

If one wants to be sure their ballot is counted in the results released Election night, March 3, they must either
1. Vote at a Vote Center anytime, up to and including election day when polls close at 8 p.m.
2. OR vote by mail so that the Registrar receives the ballot by midnight Sunday March 1 (so mail the ballot a few days prior, or turn in to a vote center by 8 p.m. Sunday, or drop in a secure ballot drop box by Saturday, February 29).

On Election night, the first results will be reported just after the polls close with updates thereafter every half hour until all the above ballots are counted; the Registrar anticipates finishing that count around 11 p.m. on March 3.
After that, Registrar will process remaining ballots, with the first update of tallies at 5 p.m. on March 4 and then at 5 p.m. every day thereafter until all votes are counted.

In any case, vote! The timing only might matter for the presidential primary, not for the other races including the important one for boards of education and supervisors. Vote by mail ballots received by March 6 will still be counted.

PAC-TIVISM

Deepest kudos and thanks

to PAC members and friends who have hit the streets to knock on doors and drop literature for Democratic candidates in the past few weeks.... we LITERALLY could not have distributed those 2000 blue voter guides without you!!!
We still have a few hundred voter guides to get out there, so please contact Julie Tapp to arrange a time to help if you can!  JulieTapp1@gmail.com or 949-702-6606.
Although we have gotten a good response to the voter guide around UCI, we are also finding a high need for information within the student population when it comes to where and when to vote. Many have not received ballots at their current address, either because they are permanently registered at their parents' address, or because of a move since they last registered to vote. They also don't seem to know about the 2 vote centers on campus which will open Feb. 29, or that they can just walk in and request a ballot. We really need to continue to do this educational work on and around campus between now and March 3. Educating young voters is an investment in November, and in the future of the planet. Please help out if you can!
Julie Tapp, Activism Chair

Difficult to recap the week...

It is so difficult to recap the week, or even the last few days. Bill Barr has now been condemned by how many Justice Dept. attorneys? Are the Republicans completely tone deaf? I read a terrifying article in Business Insider about Authoritarianism and the Republican party and I wonder, do the Republicans just not care anymore? How could they even consider that this is ok? So now, more than ever, we must Keep the House, Elect the Senate and Win the Presidency. This is our mantra for the next 8-1/2 months. (I also read a nice article in NY Magazine about how Obama is hanging back in his endorsements until the Convention, for anyone who is interested:-)

At last week's meeting, we had an informative presentation from the Registrar of Voters office about voting. Voting is easy, by mail and at Voting Centers. NPP's can vote as Democrats if they request a ballot. Please, if you have any questions, contact the Registrar or reply to this email and we will get them answered. We must have a good turnout to win. And please read more below about down ballot races!

I cannot tell you how excited we are....at our next meeting we are going to welcome one of our most popular speakers...

We have also been invited by our home/host, University Synagogue to two of their special evenings.

* First, on Friday, February 21, Dr. Norman Ornstein, will speak at University Synagogue Shabbat services. Services at 7:00 p.m., followed by his presentation. One of the most respected experts on Congress, the Presidency and American politics, Dr. Ornstein will speak, using both cathartic humor and detailed seriousness, about where America stands today and, even more importantly, what we can do about it. There will be time for questions after his talk, which is entitled "A Guide For The Perplexed, The Disillusioned, The Desperate And The Not-Yet-Deported."

* On Friday, February 28 at 7:00 pm, Valerie Plame will speak at services.

I know you have heard this before but be sure to vote all the way down the ballot. In this year's race, it is imperative that we vote in the County School Board races....be sure to vote for Andy Thorburn, Beckie Gomez or Jordan Brandman (depending on where you live) and also for the Board of Supervisors. Some of you will have a choice between Democrats in those races but there is one race with only one Dem and that is where former Irvine Mayor and current Supervisor Don Wagner (R) is facing Democrat Ashleigh Aitken. In this race, it is as if it is already November. Whoever receives 50%+1 is the new supervisor.

If you have ballot questions, post them on our FB page or send them to this email and we will try to answer.

Here's a special message from our activism chair, Julie Tapp:

Greetings DemOC PAC-TIVISTS!
If you are feeling down or overwhelmed by the news, I get it. The horribleness of this administration is truly unbelievable, and living through this nightmare can feel overwhelming at times. As you probably know by now, my personal antidote to the news is activism, and I'm writing to ask for your help.
But first, I also want to share with you the latest offer from Jen Hoffman, one of my favorite activism resources who sends out a weekly Americans of Conscience checklist. Jen is offering a 4-part shot in the arm for Americans of conscience called "The Art of Perseverance," starting this Tuesday. I would LOVE it if others in our group can do this donation-based series too. Check it out here

500 BLUE WAVE POSTCARDS ARE ON THEIR WAY TO DEMOCRATS IN YORBA LINDA!!
I have a feeling there's going to be a big boost in blue voters in the Yorba Linda primary this year!
SINCERE THANKS to everyone who helped with postcard writing and mailing, before, during and after our February meeting!!

WE NEED MORE HELP TO GET 2500 BLUE VOTER GUIDES TO UC IRVINE VOTERS!!!
We've had 2 fun and effective "Drop 50" events since Feb. 1, and have distributed 400 blue voter guide cards so far! We want to recognize those** who have pushed themselves out of their comfort zones to help distribute blue voter guides around UCI, University Hills and University Park. You all were amazing volunteers, and you helped us learn a lot on these first runs!

I have 2,100 cards in a box at my house where they are not helping sway anyone (not even the cat). PLEASE PLEASE if you are able, contact me to pick up a packet and hit up the dorms or a few friendly streets in University area. I'll go with you... or you can bring a friend! We are approaching registered Democrats and like-minded independent voters. It's super fun talking to students and others on campus!!

We realize many of you do not live near UCI. We are doing UCI as part of a coordinated effort with surrounding Democratic clubs to divide and conquer turfs close to the geographic location where we meet. There are still nearly 40,000 potential UCI voters to educate out there, and not much time to educate them before they turn in ballots. I can give you a packet and some addresses around UCI to do at your convenience any day & time this week, &/or you can come to one of the other organized events (signups below).

Feb. 11 Mtg Update, Down Ballot Voting!

It's been a brutal week. The impeachment verdict, the Iowa Caucus mess, the State of the Union, the total necessity of winning the Senate, keeping the House and beating the worse-than-ever Trump. Bright spots included Rep. Adam Schiff's brilliant arguments and closing, and Mitt Romney standing as a conservative with character in a room full of cowards. We will talk about all of those things and more on Tuesday evening at our meeting. I hope you will join us. We will also learn about the new voting rules (you might want to bring your ballot!). Details are below.

Please, please, please, before you send or submit your ballot, be sure to vote in the down ballot races, which are more important than ever before. If you missed our meeting about the OC Board of Education, you missed an extraordinary evening where we learned that quietly, the right wing has been taking over our County Board of Education without our noticing. It is a true travesty. You MUST vote in this County School Board race...for Andy Thorburn, Jordan Brandman or Beckie Gomez (the only incumbent and the only Dem currently on the Board). Who you vote for depends on what district you are in. The takeaway from the last meeting is that the County Board has the right to overrule much of what local school boards do, particularly with regard to Charter Schools. We cannot let the right wing control our County Schools. See BELOW ABOUT THE THREE CANDIDATES TO SUPPORT ON MARCH 3. The money to control our schools comes from unsavory national sources. Please, take this seriously and VOTE!

Of course Tuesday, Feb. 11 is the New Hampshire Primary and we will keep you updated with the results throughout our meeting.

We will discuss any topic of your choice after we have learned about the new voting system....

Finally, we are in the midst of our membership drive. We raise money to give money...to Senate, Congressional and possibly Presidential candidates. Through our Political Research Committee, we give to candidates in hard, key, races where they are fighting to win. In 2018, we gave to $35,000 to 18 candidates (including Levin, Porter and Rouda) and we made a difference.

In the 10 years we have been a PAC, it has NEVER been more important to give this money than it is this year. We choose carefully, we give thoughtfully and we will make a difference in a year where nothing could matter more than helping to win the win the Senate, keep the House and the White House and save our Democracy. We hope you will join us and help us meet our goal of $70,000 so we can really make the difference in 2020.

Notes from our last meeting....thank you Ann Haley!

WHAT’S THE OC BOARD OF EDUCATION, AND WHY DO WE CARE?
“There’s some bad news but there’s also some good news,” DPOC chair emeritus Fran Sdao told DemOCPAC members Jan. 14. “The bad news is that our local school districts and our Orange County Board of Ed are under attack by a very conservative group of Republicans in Orange County. The good news is that education policy is set by our state Legislature which is overwhelmingly Democratic.”

HOW WE GOT HERE
An O.C. group called Education Alliance is promoting back to basic education, American values, and creationism. They are anti-public school, anti-teachers, anti-teachers union, and pro-charter schools. In 2007 this group recalled three Capistrano Unified board members. In 2008 they successfully recalled two board members who were up for election in November. Former DPOC chair Fran Sdao and others studied what happened, started a PAC, and found candidates to run in a 2010 recall to oust 2 of the people who’d won board seats in 2008. “The people who were against us are still out there operating against public schools in every school district in Orange County and the OC Board of Education which can veto local school policy.

THE OC BOARD OF EDUCATION ELECTION MARCH 3
There are 5 members on the County Board of Education, and there’s an elected county superintendent (in most counties, the board of education hires the superintendent).

OCBE provides programs for our most vulnerable students, who might not have the support that student in wealthy districts have. OCBE also has a legal department that offers help to school districts.

There are three trustee areas up for election on March 3.

In District 1, incumbent trustee Beckie Gomez is running for re-election in a heavily Democratic district. She’s got a good chance to win, Sdao said.

The District 3 seat is currently held by incumbent Ken Williams. He stands for abstinence-based sex ed programs and promotes Judeo-Christian values as the reason for our nation’s greatness.

In District 4 in North OC, the non-conservative incumbent is retiring and sought out Jordan Brandman to run in his place. Brandman is in a tough race.

When a charter school’s application to a local school board is denied (if it doesn’t meet all legal requirements), the only place it can appeal is to the OCBE. In the last 4 1/2 years there’ve been 15 appeals; 12 have been reversed.

THE PROGRESSIVE CANDIDATES
District 1: Andy Thorburn
“Public education is at risk,” said Andy Thorburn, running for District 3 against incumbent Ken Williams, a 24-year OCBE member who’s now the leader of OCBE’s rightwing majority. Williams supports conversion therapy.

District 4, Jordan Brandman
Brandman is well-versed in education policy. He’s a former Anaheim Union High School District board member and is an Anaheim City Council member. Brandman is the only candidate endorsed by the OC Teachers Association and Orange County CSEA.

District 1, incumbent Beckie Gomez seeking re-election
Beckie Gomez worked for 25 years in health care, was a Tustin City Council member, and now is dean of Health Science at Cypress College. “I see how education changes peoples’ lives,” she said.

Membership Dues!

Dear DemOC PAC Members and Friends,

It's hard to believe that 2020 has finally arrived and that we are nearly a full month in! Obviously much is already happening in the political world and we are eager to do all we can to keep Orange County Blue.  AND, paint the Senate and White House BLUE too!

It is time to join DemOC PAC for 2020, if you haven't already! Membership dues are one of DemOC PAC’s top fundraisers, and as you know, 2020 is an election year of the utmost importance.

Membership dues for 2020 are only $100 per year if you pay at one time. But don’t be constrained, especially this year, by our basic level of dues. Many people pay more, up to $2700. You can join at the $100 level or $250 or $1000 -- whatever suits your budget. Please be generous this year, the most important year ever. And feel free to break your dues into monthly payments. Monthly subscriptions start at $10 a month...feel free to give $25, $50, $75, $100 or more.
Please renew online today at www.democpac.org/membership.html
Scroll to the bottom and click on “Join the PAC”.

Why join the PAC? Because there is power in numbers. In 2018 we gave $36,000 to 15 campaigns. We researched what campaigns needed our money and we gave locally, in the state and around the country, and our dollars made a difference. People recognize DemOC PAC and they look to us for leadership, for our programming, for the community we have created and for our meaningful contributions.

Thanks to your help, we have already sent the maximum contributions for the primaries to our OC congressional representatives Katie Porter, Harley Rouda and Mike Levin. We must support elections elsewhere...it is imperative that Democrats take back the Senate, keep the House, and win the White House. Your membership is keenly important to our fight.

Again, the link is www.democpac.org/membership.html
Scroll to the bottom and click on “Join the PAC”.You may also pay the yearly dues by check, made out to DemOC PAC.  Please write “membership dues” on the memo line and mail it to:  DemOC PAC, 6 Brisbane, Irvine, CA 92612.
Or stop by the Membership table at our next PAC meeting on February 11th and we can help you renew.

Thank you for making a difference! We value your membership and your participation and look forward to working with you in 2020.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reply to this email.

Thank you so much and thanks to those who have already joined!

Membership Chair & President

How many hours did you watch?

How many hours of Impeachment proceedings did you watch today? I am in the serious problem range! I not only watch the proceedings but all of the coverage before, during and after. I'm going to need help when this ends...I'm looking at days at the beach or maybe just some activism to return to sanity. I remain hopeful that the Republican Senators, with their cellphones down and milk in hand, MIGHT come to their senses. I have to say that Adam Schiff and the House Managers are impressive.

Please be sure to call your friends and family in states with Republican senators. Ask them to call those senators and encourage them to be reasonable and hear the witnesses. The number for the US Capitol is 202-224-3121. Thanks!

We have an informative program set for our February meeting. We will have time to talk and vent about the Impeachment, talk about the California primary and any other topic you wish to discuss. In addition,
